Key: N/R = Not Released. Class 2024 reflects COVID-era gap year deferrals inflating acceptance rates. Class 2025+ reflects test-optional surge in applications.
Key Observations for Simulation Calibration
-
Acceptance rate range: HYPSM rates cluster between 3.2% and 4.8% in recent cycles (excluding COVID-era Class of 2024). A simulation default of 3.5-5.0% is appropriate.
-
Early round multiplier: Princeton's SCEA shows the strongest early advantage (15.8% vs 2.9% RD = 5.5x). Harvard and Yale cluster around 3x. MIT's non-restrictive EA shows only 1.5x. For simulation purposes, a 2-3x ED/EA multiplier for HYPSM is reasonable, with Princeton as an outlier.
-
SAT convergence: All five schools have nearly identical SAT middle-50% bands (1500-1580). The primary differentiator is MIT's Math floor (780 vs 760 at others).
-
GPA ceiling effect: 67-75% of enrolled students have a perfect 4.0, making GPA a weak differentiator at HYPSM. The simulation's sigmoid academic index should flatten near the top.
-
Yield rates: Harvard (84%) and Stanford (82%) lead in yield. Yale's yield is notably lower (~70%), suggesting more cross-admits choosing competitors. MIT yield is high (~82%) due to STEM specialization reducing overlap.
-
Application volume: Yale and Stanford receive the most applications (~57K), while MIT receives the fewest (~29K) due to STEM focus. Princeton (~40K) is in the middle. The simulation should reflect these different pool sizes.
-
Test submission rates: MIT has the highest SAT submission rate (83%) while Stanford has the lowest (47%). This reflects different test-optional policies and may affect how test scores should be weighted in the simulation.
