No varsity athletics program. RISD does not participate in NCAA or other intercollegiate athletic conferences. Students have access to Brown University's athletic facilities through the RISD-Brown cross-registration partnership, and there are recreational and club sports available.
Notable
RISD is the most selective art and design school in the United States. Admissions require a portfolio submission in addition to academic materials -- the portfolio is the single most important component of the application. RISD offers cross-registration with Brown University (located adjacent on College Hill in Providence, RI), allowing students to take courses at either institution. The curriculum emphasizes studio-based learning with a rigorous foundation year required of all students. RISD alumni include notable designers, artists, and creatives across industries.

Admissions Strategy
- Portfolio is the single most important component — forums emphasize drawing from direct observation as what RISD values most
- Submit 12-20 pieces; RISD reviewers respond to work grounded in what you see, not what you imagine or copy
- Technical skill alone isn't enough — concept development, idea generation, and willingness to push into unexpected territory matter
- ED reportedly has a meaningful advantage (~25% vs ~15% RD); acceptance rate has dropped from 29% to 17% in six years
- Cross-registration with Brown is a significant draw for students who want liberal arts alongside studio art
Campus Culture & Fit
- Foundation year is described as intentionally grueling: 8-10 hour studio classes three days a week plus liberal arts courses
- Students report the culture is "if you're not miserable, you're not working hard enough" — a non-stop work environment where time not spent on homework cuts into sleep
- Mental health concerns are significant: high stress, inadequate sleep/eating, and limited therapy access (month-long waits)
- Despite the intensity, many students say foundation year was transformative and built a strong work ethic
- Brown partnership provides social and academic variety that pure art schools lack
Financial Aid Reputation
- Only 32% of students receive financial aid; average aid package is $42K against an $86K total COA
- High net cost even after aid — $42K average net price means RISD is expensive for most families
- Financial aid is not a competitive strength; students choosing between RISD and other art schools often cite cost as the deciding factor
Simulation-Relevant Takeaways
- Portfolio requirement creates a fundamentally different applicant pool — academic metrics are secondary to artistic ability
- 33% international enrollment is the highest among schools in this dataset, reflecting RISD's global reputation
- For modeling: RISD should have a portfolio-gated admissions filter; ~45% yield is high for art schools, driven by brand prestige and Brown cross-registration
